The new guidelines from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration specify the standards and criteria that must be met by devices used to store firearms. This is to ensure the safety of bystanders. Especially since hunters and shooters most often keep their rifles at home. Fortunately, for individual pieces, they do not need to create special storage rooms. An appropriate gun safe or safe is sufficient. Whether a particular gun safe meets the standards and guidelines of the Ministry is assessed by the Institute of Precision Mechanics in Warsaw. S1 safes for short and long hunting firearms?

S1 gun safes are designed for storing firearms and ammunition by hunters and shooters. This is regulated by the ordinance of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration. Both rifles, pistols, and cartridges must not fall into unauthorized hands. Properly stored firearms prevent this. Not every available metal safe meets the standards set by the Ministry. Every shooter is obliged to store hunting firearms in an appropriate safe that will prevent rifles and pistols from falling into unauthorized hands. It is therefore made in accordance with the applicable regulations found in the Ordinance of the Minister of Internal Affairs dated 26.08.2014 on the storage, carrying, and recording of firearms and ammunition. Types of safes available on the market

The safest gun cabinets are those with S1 and S2 classes, featuring locks that meet the EN 1300 security standards. Safes can be used to store handguns or ammunition. However, it is crucial that they also meet the appropriate standards.

S1 – Cabinet - This is the lowest approved class of gun cabinets and safes, commonly used by hunters. They often have either a key lock or an electronic lock, although the safest are B-class mechanical combination locks. S1 cabinets are typically constructed with a single-walled body made of burglary-resistant and fireproof steel. They can be anchored, meaning they can be fixed to the floor.

S2 Class Cabinets - These offer greater anti-burglary protection than S1 class. The doors are made with double-walled bodies and also have fireproof and moisture-resistant features. Additionally, the cabinet's weight is greater, making it harder to move or remove from a room. They most often have key locks. In these types of cabinets, besides ammunition and firearms, you can also store confidential documents and valuable items. They are not easily defeated by burglars and thieves.

What distinguishes an S1 class cabinet?

As mentioned, S1 cabinets are the lowest security class that a firearm storage device should have. They are designed to prevent shotguns or pistols from falling into the wrong hands. The security measures cannot be breached by a child, a curious teenager, or even a burglar. High-quality locks are virtually impossible to open without the correct key or combination.

For key locks, the key should be stored in a different room than where the cabinet is located. Ideally, in a place inaccessible to minors and so unusual that even an adult would find it hard to guess that anything could be placed there.

In most S1 cabinets, the key lock can be replaced with a combination lock (if the cabinet does not have both). In such cases, the combination must be non-obvious but memorable for the firearm owner. Just like with passwords and bank PINs, the combination for a gun cabinet lock should not be related to birth dates, anniversaries, etc. With S1 cabinets featuring a combination lock, you also don't have to worry about a potential burglar "tricking" the lock with a factory-set combination.

Safes and gun cabinets for hunting rifles, long guns, and handguns - what does the regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration say about them?

The regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration regarding firearm storage clearly specifies the conditions that must be met in weapon storage facilities and devices used for their storage. Paragraph 5, point 1 of this document states:

"Persons possessing firearms and ammunition based on the permit referred to in Article 10, paragraph 4 of the Act, store firearms and ammunition in devices meeting at least the S1 class requirements according to the PN-EN 14450 standard."

Furthermore, the regulation also governs the standards that must be met by safes, short firearm safes, and display cases for storing commemorative ammunition:

"Display cases for storing firearms and ammunition must have:

a) a construction made of materials ensuring stability,

b) the ability to be anchored to the floor or blocked to prevent movement,

c) glazing made of glass with increased resistance to penetration and breakage at least in class P6B according to the PN-EN 356 standard,

d) closures at least in class 5 according to the PN-EN 12209 standard".
It is also important to emphasize the significance of paragraph 7, which states: "Firearm storage devices have declarations of conformity with the relevant Polish Standards or certificates of conformity with the relevant Polish Standards, issued by a certification body accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation".
